Although the warm rays of the sun can be therapeutic, it can be easy to overdo and wind up with a nasty burn. Luckily, there are many wonderful sunburn remedies to soothe the skin, without irritating chemicals or drying products such as soap. Look to your kitchen, garden, or health foods stores for an easy, yet soothing DIY sunscreen remedy. Most can be applied topically using a gauze, washcloth, or cotton ball.

Aloe vera: The use of aloe vera gel for burns predates to ancient Greece. The extract from this plant may have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can help the healing process and prevent blistering. A review of aloe vera studies concluded that the plant may be effective in expediting wound healing in burns.  Aloe vera gel can be purchased form most stores, or obtained from a plant by splitting open a spear and extracting the gel.

Calendula: The anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial properties of this wonderful healing flower can be very soothing against a sunburn (as well as minor cuts and scrapes). Extracts of this flower can be found in homeopathic ointments. A study in rats showed the calendula may help promote burn healing. Specifically, the research found that calendula applied to the burn healing resulted in the presence indicators of healing such as increased collagen and decreased level of proteins found during injury.

Vinegar: The natural inflammation-fighting properties of vinegar can be attributed to its acetic acid content. For sunburns, white or apple-cider cider vinegar works best, dabbed onto the skin from a solution of 3 parts water/1 part-vinegar. 

Baking soda: This is an especially effective sunburn remedy for when the itching starts to set in. Soaking in a bathtub of lukewarm water with a sprinkle of baking soda can relieve your discomfort. You can also apply baking soda diluted with water directly to the skin using a cloth or cotton balls.

Milk: The whey in protein may have benefits in healing a burn, although the research is limited. At a minimum, can nourish and sooth the skin. Mix with cool water, and apply with a compress.

Cornstarch: A paste using water and cornstarch can be very cooling when applied to a burn.

Lettuce: You can make a healing sunburn remedy using lettuce. Boil the leaves, then cool, and apply the liquid to your skin.

Oatmeal: Applying ground oatmeal as a compress with cool water can provide all-over relief.

Witch hazel: Nature’s astringent found in most medicine cabinets can provide relief from inflammation.

Yogurt: Applying plain, cultured yogurt to sunburned skin supplies healing enzymes and probiotics.

Although Mother Nature provides rays of sunshine that may burn, she also supplies a bounty of natural remedies to heal.
