"Diabetes" (Diabetes Mellitus) is actually an umbrella term for a category of 3 metabolic diseases: Diabetes Type 1, Diabetes Type 2 (highlighted in this health challenge), and Gestational Diabetes.

Regardless of the category, diabetes is simply the body’s inability to use the hormone insulin to control blood glucose levels. Without proper amounts of adequately working insulin, healthy cells throughout the body are bathed in toxic levels of glucose resulting in cell damage, most of which is permanent. Cell damage can occur in the eyes leading to blindness, the kidneys resulting in kidney failure, nerves causing amputations and the heart resulting in heart failure and stroke.

In describing the types associated with diabetes, keep in mind that no type of diabetes is worse than the other, as all result in high blood glucose if not managed and controlled with diligence and care.

Also, Metabolic Syndrome, Prediabetes, and Insulin Resistance, though generally thought of as causes of the three larger metabolic diseases, can also be thought of subcategories of these larger health challenges.
