Reiki is generally felt as a very relaxing energy that is passed from one person (who has been "attuned" by a Reiki Master) to another. The practitioner generally places hands on the fully clothed body of the client, usually over the important organs, and/or over an area that has been injured, diseased, or traumatized. Reiki can also be sent from a distance, or by holding the hands a few inches to a few feet from the body. Most people feel relief within 10 to 60 minutes, and some even become so relaxed that they fall asleep.
My theory about Reiki is that it relaxes the body and reminds the cells of their natural healthy state. Reiki does not cure anything, but it can help to allow the body to heal itself. I have often used it on friends and clients with headaches or simple injuries (like twisted ankles) and it has relieved their pain very quickly.
Reiki also helps to open people to energy and spiritual awareness. Many people feel heat or tingling when receiving or giving Reiki. These physical experiences of energy can be quite powerful. We have no scientific explanation, which causes people to expand their openness to possibilities of healing that they may not have entertained before.

I received Reiki I and Reiki II training several years ago. I chose not to complete the training to become a "Reiki Master Teacher" because of reservations I had regarding the school's lack of providing anything beyond anecdotal evidence for Reiki treatment. I attempted to discuss the matter of research, and the teachers seemed to be uninterested. I understand not everyone needs to be a "scientist." On the other hand, if I'm going to be trained in any healing method, I need to know that there is some evidence for me providing it. Otherwise, it is a waste of time and money for me and the patient.
Personally, I believe the body has powerful energies, but I also need some research evidence to positively support its clinical use. I would love to see any current or future research on Reiki reviewing its effects.
