Shared experience with Low Back Pain and Sciatica and Hatha Yoga 13 years ago

The year I turned 26, I started to have lower back aches, and sharp shooting pains down my right leg. I had never had any injuries or issues like this, so I ignored it hoping it would go away. It didn't. My boyfriend (now husband) told me to go to an Iyengar yoga class and that it would help me.

In a short period of time, I learned postures that actually relived the pain in my back, strengthened my core and back, and realigned my body. I also learned in yoga class what the source of the pain was, and developed walking/sitting/sleeping habits that were healthier for my body. As I practiced more and more yoga, the sciatic pain decreased to practically nothing, and the back pain is much much less.

The best part is that now, I practice 2-4 times a week in class, and one or twice out of class, and if I ever have a back ache, I know exactly how to get rid of it.

I feel empowered in my health and well being, and confident that no matter what comes my way physically, emotionally, etc, that I can use yoga to help me heal. I love yoga.
