Shared experience with Low Back Pain and Sciatica and Hatha Yoga 13 years ago

I spent a lot more time sitting down in my job after college and noticed that my hips and low back would ache after just two hours in a chair. I ignored it for a while, thinking that I just needed to get used to sitting for such long periods, but then I began to have pain down my buttocks and legs. As a long-time practitioner of yoga, I knew which poses were good for low back pain and sciatica (triangle, side-angle, cat-cow, etc.) and sure enough they worked! But the pain would inevitably return, sometimes getting so bad that I would wake up with numbness in my hips at night. I finally spoke to my yoga teacher about it and she showed me a few, simple exercises that I could do daily to help alleviate the pain (mostly variations/modifications of the poses I was already doing). These had longer lasting effects and now I can get through a shift relatively pain free! While I no longer do the exercises every day, I continue to use them if/when the pain returns and it clears up within a few days.

Yoga has always been my go-to remedy for everything from minor aches and pains, to stress and digestive issues. I'm so grateful to belong to a community of yogis who offer such a wealth of information and resources!
