Side effects
Omeprazole has a low incidence of side effects. The common reported side effects associated with Omeprazole use include:
Clinical trials show that the following side effects occur in patients who were given omeprazole and clarithromycin:
Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rashes, itchinesss, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
Warnings
• If you have liver disease, talk with healthcare provider.
• Use caution if you have risk factors for osteoporosis (alcohol use, cigarette smoking, other family members with osteoporosis, taking medicines to treat seizures, taking steroids).
Do not use over-the-counter omeprazole without your doctor's advice if you have any of the following:
Before taking Omeprazole, tell your doctor • Check medicines with healthcare provider. This medicine may not mix well with other medicines.
• Avoid alcohol (includes wine, beer, and liquor).
• Tell healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become on getting pregnant during treatment. Omeprazole can pass into breast milk. Do not use omeprazole without telling your doctor .
• Tell healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding.
Drug interactions
Using Omeprazole with any of the following medicines is usually not recommended, but may be needed in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may adjust the dose.
Omeprazole may cause an increased risk of some side effects of the drugs listed below. If they are prescribed with Omeprazole, your doctor may make changes in the dose or frequency for one or both of the medicines:
• Headache.
• Nausea or vomiting. Small frequent meals, frequent mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help.
• Diarrhea.
• Hip, spine, or wrist fractures may rarely occur.
• If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control center or emergency department immediately.
• Signs of a life-threatening reaction. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue skin color; fits; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Severe dizziness or passing out.
• Severe belly pain.
• Severe diarrhea.
• Severe nausea or vomiting.
• Unusual bruising or bleeding.
• Severe bone pain.
• Any rash.
• No improvement in condition or feeling worse.
Omeprazole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor that is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis.
Omeprazole may also be given with antibiotics in treating gastric ulcers caused by helicobater pylori.
It is available in delayed-release capsule, enteric coated tablet and powder form.

• This medicine does not mix well with some medicines. Serious reactions may occur. Check all medicines with healthcare provider.
• If you have an allergy to omeprazole or any other part of this medicine.
• Tell healthcare provider if you are allergic to any medicine. Make sure to tell about the allergy and how it affected you. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other symptoms involved.
• Omeprazole prevents symptoms and damage to the gastrointestinal tract caused by stomach acid or infection.
All forms:
• Take this medicine 1 hour before the first meal of the day.
Tablet (Prilosec OTC™):
• Swallow tablet whole. Do not chew, break, or crush.
• Do not use for more than 14 days. Talk with your healthcare provider.
Capsule:
• Swallow capsule whole. Do not chew or crush.
• You may sprinkle contents of capsule on soft food or liquid. Do not chew.
• For patients who have feeding tubes, open capsule and mix with 3 tablespoonfuls of apple juice. Give through feeding tube. Flush the feeding tube before and after medicine is given.
Packets:
• Mix the 2.5 mgpacket contents with 1 teaspoon of water or the 10 mgpacket contents with 1 tablespoon of water. Let sit for 2-3 minutes, stir, and drink. Rinse with more water and drink.
• Those who have feeding tubes can also use the liquid. Flush the feeding tube before and after medicine is given.
• Take a missed dose as soon as possible.
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule.
• Do not take a double dose or extra doses.
• Do not change dose or stop medicine. Talk with healthcare provider.
• Change in condition being treated. Is it better, worse, or about the same?
• Follow up with healthcare provider.
• Store at room temperature.
• Protect capsules from light.
• Protect capsules and tablets from moisture. Do not store in a bathroom or kitchen.

• Keep all medicine out of the reach of children and pets.
• Most medicines can be thrown away in household trash after mixing with coffee grounds or kitty litter and sealing in a plastic bag.

• Talk with healthcare provider before starting any new medicine, including over-the-counter, natural products, or vitamins.
• This medicine is used to prevent or treat gastrointestinal ulcers caused by infection.
• This medicine is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease.
• This medicine is used to treat heartburn.
• This medicine is used to treat syndromes caused by huge amounts of stomach acid.
• This medicine is used to prevent or treat ulcers of the esophagus (swallowing tube).
