Side effects

Below are the common reported side effects that occur with Ranitidine use. Contact your doctor if these side effects persist or become bothersome:

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • stomach upset
  • headache
  • nausea

The following serious side effects would require immediate medical attention:

  • Severe allergic reactions
  • confusion
  • change in the amount of urine produced * dark urine
  • depression
  • changes in the heart rate
  • fever
  • chills
  • sore throat
  • hallucinations
  • severe or persistent headache
  • severe stomach pain
  • unusual bruising or bleeding
  • jaundice or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

If you have concerns about side effects, do not hesitate to contact your health care provider.

Warnings Ranitidine should not be taken if a patient is:

  • allergic to Rantidine or other H2-receptor antagonists
  • diagnosed with blood disease porphyria
  • having trouble swallowing
  • on dasatinib therapy

Some health conditions may interact with Ranitidine. Tell your health care provider or pharmacist if any of the following applies to you:

  • history of kidney or liver problems
  • allergies to medicine, food or other substances
  • painful swallowing
  • vomiting with blood
  • black or bloody stools,
  • severe or persistent heartburn
  • frequent wheezing or chest pain
  • chest or shoulder pain with shortness of breath
  • pain spreading to your arm, neck, or shoulder
  • lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting or
  • sudden increased sweating

Pregnancy or Breast-Feeding: If you become pregnant while on Ranitidine therapy, you need to contact your doctor. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you take Ranitidine, you should consult with your doctor to discuss possible risks to your baby.

Drug interactions

Ranitidine may interact or alter the effects of certain drugs. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Certain benzodiazepines, procainamide, glipizide, or warfarin because the risk of their side effects may be increased by ranitidine
  • Delavirdine, dasatinib, gefitinib, HIV protease inhibitors, itraconazole, or ketoconazole because their effectiveness may be reduced by ranitidine

Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine without checking with your doctor.

What are the precautions when taking this medicine?

• If you have kidney disease, talk with healthcare provider.

• If you have PKU, talk with healthcare provider. Some products do contain phenylalanine.

• Check medicines with healthcare provider. This medicine may not mix well with other medicines.

• Talk with healthcare provider before using other: aspirin, aspirin-containing products, blood thinners, garlic, ginseng, ginkgo, ibuprofen or like products, pain medicines, or vitamin E.

• Avoid alcohol (includes wine, beer, and liquor).

• Tell healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant.

• Tell healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding.

What are some possible side effects of this medicine?

• Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over several minutes from sitting or lying position. Be careful climbing.

• Headache.

• Diarrhea.

• Constipation. More liquids, regular exercise, or a fiber-containing diet may help. Talk with healthcare provider about a stool softener or laxative.

Reasons to call healthcare provider immediately

• If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control center or emergency department immediately.

• Signs of a life-threatening reaction. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue skin color; fits; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Severe dizziness or passing out.

• Significant change in thinking clearly and logically.

• Chest pain or pressure or fast heartbeat.

• Unusual bruising or bleeding.

• Any rash.

• No improvement in condition or feeling worse.

• Take a missed dose as soon as possible.

• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule.

• Do not take a double dose or extra doses.

• The over-the-counter tablet can be taken on an as needed basis. Do not take more often than every 12 hours, unless instructed by healthcare provider.
