Parents with children with ADHD are all too familiar with the difficulty of getting their son or daughter to “switch gears.” Similarly, children with ADHD can over-focus on seemingly insignificant details like a bird outside a classroom window. In his book Attention Deficit Disorder, Thomas E. Brown describes this tendency as “hyperfocus” or the inability to disengage one’s attention from a task, sight or sound. That said over-focusing is not among the symptoms listed in the DSM-IV's formal criteria.
