Although it was very painful, as I only had local anesthisia, I would recommend it to someone who has a true spinal headache. I take daily migraine medication because my migraines are so bad, but migraines are NOTHING compared to a spinal headache. I had to have a lumbar puncture to check the pressure of my spinal fluid and although I did everything I was told, I got a spinal headache from the minute I sat up. In less than 24 hrs I was in the ER trying the IV caffeine and some other recommended meds first, and I did get a small amount of relief. But the headache was incapacitating! I couldn't sit or stand without excruciating pain for days before I had the blood patch. After the patch I layed on a bed for just over an hour and when I got up, I had only a dull headache, which has now eased up!

I had the blood patch, and from the second the nurse had me sit up I have been having the WORSE HEADACHES I have ever had. And I recommend anesthisia for this. Of which didn't work. So two days later had to do it again. And I'm still having the headaches. Now I have to have surgery by a Neurosurgeon go in and try to stop the leak. After having 3 surgeries to try to stop the leak and none of them working, now my Neurosurgeon has to try to fix it now.

i have had a blood patch and i am suffering from headaches and low to mid back pain and also intensifies my herniated discs and arthritis in the spine. i mean you go into to the hospital with no puntured spianl sac and you come out with a mistake made by the doctor and yet they all cover there butts, i was never told the side effects of a blood patch only that it relieves the headaches if i had known more i would of seen if there was another way.

Definitely understand the risks vs benefits first. Remember that no question is too small or "stupid" to ask. Do try to least invasive treatments first ie lots of fluids, some caffeine, laying flat, trying ice or heat. This is a treatment of last resort but it does help some people immensely. For me, it was not a positive outcome. I have a complicated case further complicated by other serious medical issues. Definitely do not suffer in silence. Speak up and if you are brushed aside keep at it and call another doctor or present to ER if necessary. My prayers are with everyone that deals with pain day in and day out as well as the family and friends that are kind and strong enough to still be with us.
Be prepared for pain!

If needed it can help relieve a negative pressure headache after a lumbar puncture. However would only recommend after all other possibilities have been explored.
It was tried for a post dural puncture headache. There was difficulty finding a vein to start i v ( possibly due to hydration). Also difficulty finding a vein to withdraw blood. No sedation used. Local anesthesia to lessen needle pain. Extreme pain/ body spasms upon injecting blood (10+) lasted throughout procedure (stabbing pain down both legs, base of skull, back of neck and top of head of head.bo Dr. observed then ordered fentanyl unknown dosage, by i v. which lessened pain/ spasms to 9.5 level. Pain & spasms ended upon completion of procedure. Procedure &/ or fentanyl left me unable to track or respond to questions asked. Tiredness, memory loss & verbal responses still experienced 3 days post procedure. Blood pressure, oxygen, temp, & all other vitals normal. Pain levels are still elevated( +7) where pain was experienced during procedure. I have not heard of complications of this type and what factors were involved.
