The most well-known medical treatment for menopause is hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). It is prescribed both to relieve symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, depression, anxiety, vaginal dryness, and insomnia. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of diseases whose prevalence rises with age, such as osteoporosis, dementia, and certain cancers.

Other medical treatments for menopause include selective seratonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs are a more symptoms-based approach, directly treating insomnia and depression associated with menopause, as opposed to treating the hormonal source of the symptoms.
