Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Exercise

Written by Toni Sicola, ColleenO, maria_rn.

Moderate exercise can be extremely helpful for the treatment of most health conditions.

Effect of Exercise on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes every day is recommended for women with PCOS, more if obesity is present. Low-impact exercise such as pilates is encouraged, because it gently focuses on the core (typically a problem area form women with PCOS).

However, high-intensity exercise can excite the catecholamine response, causing stress on the body and upsetting the hormonal imbalance further.

Mind-body work, such as yoga, qi gong, an tai chi are also recommended.

It is important to pick a type of exercise and durations that are compatible with your physical health. If you have a serious health condition, consult with your physician before starting an exercise program.

A health condition or injury may prevent you from engaging in certain types of exercise such as jogging or bike riding but walking. Gentler forms of movement such as stretching or yoga may still be safe and beneficial options.
