Keeping the skin moisturized is an important part of psoriasis treatment. Moisturizing regularly will reduce itching and inflammation and promote flexibility of the skin. Also, soaking in water will soothe skin. Healing can be enhanced by adding solutions to bath water, such as Dead Sea salts, oils, oatmeal, and Epsom salts.

Research Evidence on Baths and Moisturizers

Balneotherapy, also known as spa therapy, is the use of hot and cold baths, along with mud packs, saunas, and steam baths, to treat a variety of conditions. Balneotherapy has shown some promise for the treatment of psoriasis.31,32

How to Use Baths and Moisturizers

For the effective treatment of psoriasis, it is recommended that moisturizing creams or ointments be applied on a regular basis. Look for products with natural ingredients and avoid products that contain any ingredients--natural or artificial--that you are sensitive to.
