Fenugreek, the latin name for which is "Trigonella foenum-graecum" has been historically used to treat menopausal symptoms, digestive issues and to induce childbirth. Today it is more commonly used to treat inflammation on the skin, to stimulate milk production in breastfeeding women, diabetes.

Effect of Fenugreek Seeds on Diabetes Type 2

Consuming fenugreek seeds are said to help quell a rise in plasma glucose levels when taken before a meal. Eating the whole seeds seems to produce the greatest prevention of a raise in plasma glucose levels, but the fenugreek gum isolate, extracted seeds and cooked seeds also produced the same effect, though to a lesser extent.^1 ^

Research Evidence on Fenugreek Seeds

One study found that fenugreek seeds when taken before a meal prevented a raise in plasma glucose levels for non-diabetic study participants and significantly decreased those levels for diabetic subjects. A 24 hour urinary glucose output and serum cholesterol levels were also reduced for diabetic patients who had taken fenugreek seeds.1

How to Use Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds are ground into a paste and taken by mouth.
